Delivered to the the Italian airline Alitalia on 24 July 1969, the C-9B/DC-9 on display at the National Naval Aviation Museum logged 56,284 flight hours in the skies over 56 different nations during its civilian and military service. Purchased by the Navy from Alitalia in 1985, the airplane completed its military service with Transport Squadron VR-46 in December 2001. Nicknamed the "City of Marietta," the airplane was among the first to land in New York City following the 11 September 2001, terrorist attacks against the World Trade Center
